Celebration of Wood - Saturday, May 27, 2017

On Saturday, May 27 from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM the Hudson River Maritime Museum’s Riverport Wooden Boat School, join us for a free open house, “Celebration of Wood,” to launch a new series of classes, "Foundations of Woodworking." View woodworking demonstrations, historic tool displays, and enjoy light refreshments, then stay for a panel discussion by Senior Instructors Michael Puryear (who will teach the first year of the Foundations of Woodworking classes), Andrew Willner, and guests.

Schedule:
11:00 AM - 2:00 PM - Demonstrations in the Riverport Wooden Boat School woodworking shop and classroom
2:00 PM - Panel discussion
4:00 PM - light refreshments and mingling

Demonstrators

Wayne Ford is a master woodworker and shipwright with extensive timber framing experience. Wayne is a senior instructor and restoration crew member at RWBS. He also runs the YouthBoat high school boatbuilding program at RWBS. Wayne will demonstrate toboggan building and talk about the nearly-complete YouthBoat wherry.

Georgette Kadgen is a master carver originally from Budapest, where she learned woodworking in a worker's collective. Chafing under political restrictions, she left in 1965, smuggling out her carving tools by baking them inside a cake. Semi-retired now, she still takes on art carving and restoration projects, and occasionally teaches at RWBS. She will demonstrate carving techniques.

Daniel Mack has been creating rustic work for more than 30 years, making furniture, architectural and garden structures, and small, simple objects. He is widely known for his signature chairs crafted out of natural materials and personal artifacts. His rustic creations appear in many private and museum collections.Daniel Mack regularly teaches workshops on rustic work and creativity. He has written seven books on rustic work, including the popular Making Rustic Furniture, Rustic Furniture Workshop, The Art of Rustic Furniture, and Rustic Garden Furniture & Accessories (with Thomas Stender). Daniel is an occasional instructor at RWBS and will demonstrate rustic building.

Bill Merchant is the Historian and Curator of the D&H Canal Museum and a professional double bass luthier. He will be displaying his collection of historic woodworking tools and answering questions. He will be joined by John Cox, a professional cooper who will be demonstrating coopering techniques.

Michael Puryear is a furniture maker, studio designer, and teacher with 30 years of experience. He has taught college-level courses and has built a number of small wooden craft. Michael is a senior instructor at RWBS and will be demonstrating some of his furniture building techniques.

John Van Buren is an engineer who, upon retirement, was a participant in one of the Great Hudson River Paddles.  During this journey by kayak down the Hudson River from Albany to Lower Manhattan, he learned from fellow paddlers the joys of paddling a boat with a custom carved wood paddle. Once he returned home he started carving paddles and making canoes and kayaks. This in turn led to membership in the Northeastern Woodworkers Association where he was introduced to the art and science of fine woodworking. John is an instructor at RWBS and will be demonstrating paddle carving.

Andrew Willner
used to build and repair boats on Staten Island, in partnership with a captain of the Hudson River sloop Clearwater and a boat carpenter, was the Baykeeper of New York Harbor for 20 years, and taught carving at a boat-building school in Maine. Andy is a senior instructor at RWBS and will be demonstrating hand-cut dovetails.

Also available will be information about RWBS adult classes for the fall, the Northeast Woodworker's Association, and more.

Foundations of Woodworking Series

The Hudson River Maritime Museum announces a new series of classes: Foundations of Woodworking (FoW). These four classes are designed to give beginner woodworkers background knowledge and skills in wood science, woodworking tools, joinery, and shop safety. In the future, these classes may be required for more advanced coursework. Students will receive a discount for registering for all four classes.

Foundations of Woodworking: Understanding Wood
In this first course of the Foundations of Woodworking series, students will examine the nature of wood as a material of construction and the unique qualities it has as a consequence of coming from a living organism. This will provide students with a foundation for future woodworking classes. PRICE: $40 for HRMM members, $65 for non-members. DATE: Thursday, June 1, 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

Foundations of Woodworking: Woodworking Tools - Their Use & Care
In the second class of the Foundations of Wood series, students will learn about the tools in a basic woodworking kit, including layout tools, saws, chisels, and planes. Each tool will be examined, its use and proper handling demonstrated, tool maintenance including fine tuning and sharpening, and where to find good tools. Students are encouraged to bring their own tools for examination. PRICE: $140 for HRMM members, $185 for non-members. DATES (2 Classes): Thursdays, June 29 and July 6, 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm.

Foundations of Woodworking: Basic Hand Joinery
In the third course of Foundations of Woodworking, students will learn the basics of hand joinery, using hand tools to create a variety of woodworking joints. This class will provide an excellent foundation for woodworking projects at home or more advanced woodworking classes. PRICE: $175 for HRMM members, $220 for non-members. DATES (3 Classes): Fridays, July 21, 28, August 4, 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm.

Foundations of Woodworking: Machine, Tool, & Shop Safety
In the final course of Foundations of Woodworking, students will learn how to safely handle tools and machinery in a shop setting. The class will include information on the different types of machinery and their uses, safe shop practices including use of eye and ear protection, emergency protocols, and advice for setting up a home shop. This class is perfect for anyone looking to get basic safety certification with woodshop machinery or looking for best practices to take home to their own workshops. PRICE: $60 for HRMM members, $85 for non-members. DATE: Sunday, August 27, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM
