Museum Mates

he Museum Mates program is a family friendly event for children ages 5 – 12 and is offered one Sunday a month from 1p.m. to 3.p.m. It provides learning about a historical topic and a fun interactive program. Museum Mates is free for HRMM members (household level and higher), or $5 per child for the general public.

Sunday, November 24: Native American History Month
November is National Native American Heritage Month! We will explore the history of Native Peoples in the Hudson Valley, the dwellings they inhabited and the jewelry and traditions they created. Children will have the choice to build a longhouse or wigwam or try their hand at making wampum beads.

Sunday, December 15: Holidays at the Rondout
Learn about the first Dutch settlers of the Rondout/Kingston area and the German and Irish immigrants that helped build the Delaware and Hudson Canal in the early 1800s. We will explore how the holidays are celebrated in the Netherlands, Germany and Ireland then hold a holiday party!

Sunday, January 26, 2020: Thomas Cole & The Hudson River School

Learn to paint like a master! In the early nineteenth century, artists flocked to the Hudson River Valley to paint realistic landscapes highlighting the majesty and wilderness of the Catskill Mountains and Hudson River. Children will learn basic painting techniques and try their hand at creating a work of art at this family friendly event. This program supports the Smithsonian Traveling Exhibit, Water/Ways.

Sunday, February 16, 2020: Miniature Boat Building
Learn the basics of model making by building your own miniature boat. Children will design and build a mini boat. There will be different building materials to choose from and a buoyancy test at the end of the event. This program supports the Smithsonian Traveling Exhibit, Water/Ways.

Sunday, March 15, 2020: Water! Water! Everywhere!
In the last Museum Mates of the spring, students will learn about the effects of water pollution on the Hudson River, the ongoing Hudson River clean-up efforts, and actions that can help keep it clean. This family-friendly program will demonstrate how wastewater is treated and released back into the Hudson River. There will be a guide-led tour of the museum, a water quality-test completed under black light, and a hands-on water cleaning activity.
