Event: Sip & Learn: Prohibition and Bootlegging in the Hudson Valley - Lecture and Tasting
Date & Time: Thursday, September 25, 2025 - 6:00 PM
Location: Hudson River Maritime Museum Homeport Barn - Kingston, NY

Pricing: $38/person, $30/member

Event Description: Have you ever wondered what prohibition-era dramas may have played out in your own backyard? The Hudson River Maritime Museum has your answer! Come hear Kingston City Historian Taylor Bruck and Greene County Historian Jon Palmer tell the wild and remarkable story of prohibition and bootlegging in the Hudson Valley. With a special focus on Kingston, Bruck and Palmer will give a sense of the causes and nature of the illicit alcohol trade fostered by the ratification of the 21st Amendment. This fascinating talk will be accompanied by a tasting of local spirits courtesy of Branchwater Farm from Milan, NY. See you there, and be ready to sip and learn!

Our Presenters: Taylor Bruck is a lifelong resident of Kingston and Acting Clerk for the County of Ulster. He previously served as the Ulster County Archivist and has the privilege to serve as the Kingston City Historian, succeeding to the role previously held by his mentor Ed Ford.

Jon Palmer is the fifth Greene County Historian and current Ulster County Archivist. He was raised in Athens, New York and previously worked as the archivist for the Greene County Historical Society.

Branchwater Farm grows their own wheat and rye for the base of their gin and whiskies, making for a truly local and unique experience. There will also be farm goods available for purchase, as well as full bottles if you taste something you particularly enjoy.

Time: 6:00 PM

Location: Hudson River Maritime Museum - Kingston, NY

Pricing: $25/Person, $22.50/HRMM Members

Event Description: Admit it, you love a good sea shanty. And while you’ve heard shanties before, you probably never heard them like this! On August 27, come enjoy this time honored art with musician Geoff Kaufman. A professional shanty singer, Geoff is known for his work at Mystic Seaport as well as his time with Pete Seeger as a Sloopsinger aboard the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater. This event will take place on the Hudson River Maritime Museum’s campus, in the Homeport Barn. Beverages from Kingston Standard Brewing Co. will be available for purchase as well as snacks. Come immerse yourself in the timeless beauty of maritime tunes, it’s a special opportunity to hear songs that don’t usually make the top 40!

Artist Bio: Although Geoff Kaufman is best known for his 35 years of singing and organizing maritime music at Mystic Seaport Museum in CT, he has always maintained an active touring schedule. Since his retirement from Mystic in June of 2019, Geoff has turned greater attention to music that speaks to issues of social justice, but also wants to keep singing songs that have caught his ear over the years for their grace and beauty. Mostly, Geoff just loves to sing, whether a capella or accompanied. Geoff has eight albums available on his website at
www.geoffkaufman.com.

This event is a community service of the Rotary Club of Kingston with sponsorship from The Reis Group Insurance Agency, Inc. and beverages provided by Kingston Standard Brewing Co.
