The Wooden Book School is offering a series of one-week classes happening over 4 weeks this summer. Designed for youth ages 12 - 16, this series will introduce students to the basics of woodworking and carpentry. Each class will employ shop safety, measuring, layout, joinery, and tool use and care. Additionally, students will be introduced to news tools and their applications over the course of each week. Each week features a different project or pair of projects:
Week 1, July 8 - 12: Build a Toolbox Week 2, July 22 - 26: Make a Stool & Bandsaw Spoon Week 3, August 5 - 9: Build a Bandsaw Box & Do Nothing Machine Week 4, August 19 - 23: Make a Half Hull Boat Model
Each class runs runs Monday-Friday from 10 AM - 2 PM or 3 PM and is stand alone. Students can register for one week or all four weeks. There are no prerequisites for any of the classes. Classes are limited to 8 students to make sure everyone receives individual attention. Students will take home their completed project on Fridays.
Young people ages 10-17 will be introduced to woodworking, boatbuilding and sailing in this 4-day course encompassing a range of STEM focused skills and activities. Cooperation, teamwork, self-confidence, and independence will be gained as students learn to build and sail boats.
Students will spend one part of the course in our woodshop learning basic woodworking skills as well as about the parts of a sailboat, and will practice their skills while building a sailboat. In the other part of their course, students will join US Sailing Certified instructors to learn the basics of sailing like steering the vessel, tacking and gybing, and capsize practice. Students will practice crew skills and will sail independently when they are ready.
The Kingston Artist Soapbox Derby, now celebrating 28 years, is a parade of non-motorized kinetic sculptures capable of rolling down lower Broadway in the Rondout neighborhood of Kingston, NY. It is an event that brings professional artists, the creatively inclined, families and friends together to show off their wild, wacky, and original soapbox creations.
This year's derby takes place on Sunday, August 18 and the Wooden Boat School will be entering a car built by our students and volunteers. Come join in on the fun in this week-long class leading up to the derby, for as many days as you'd like, whether one or two days, or all five days. You'll be part of the team that will design and build our wooden car from scratch, while learning woodworking and mechanical skills along the way. No prior experience is required and anyone from age 11 and older can join.
