But in the Hudson Valley, some people found ways around the prohibition on alcohol. Come to the museum for this special program on the history of Prohibition in the Hudson Valley. The program includes:

Lecture: “Workers, Riders, Owners: African Americans on the Hudson River in the Nineteenth Century”
Saturday, March 14, 2020 | 2:00 PM | Wooden Boat School Classroom $5/person | HRMM Members FREE CANCELLED DUE TO COVID-19 Dr. Myra Young Armstead presents an overview of the direct connection of African Americans to the river as laborers on Hudson River docks and on vessels that plied the waters between Manhattan and the Albany area. Charting the experiences of blacks as passengers on the steamboats that operated after 1807, Dr. Armstead will focus on Samuel Schuyler and his descendants, highlighting an African American family of entrepreneurs who established an independent Hudson River steamboat line.
Museum Mates: Water! Water! Everywhere

In the last Museum Mates of the spring, students will learn about the effects of water pollution on the Hudson River, the ongoing Hudson River clean-up efforts, and actions that can help keep it clean. This family-friendly program will demonstrate how wastewater is treated and released back into the Hudson River. There will be a guide-led tour of the museum, a water quality-test completed under black light, and a hands-on water cleaning activity.
This event is geared toward children ages 5 to 12 years old. Adults and children must register. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
