Join us this summer for an exciting, new, all-day youth program. The HRMM Voyager Camp offers a truly unique, multi-activity, hands-on opportunity for young participants.
Open to all skill levels, our Seafarers (9-12 years old) and Navigators (13-17 years old) will spend each day sailing for three hours, boat building and woodworking for 90 minutes, and participating in other STEAM activities like history, crafts, games, and tours on our solar tour boat Solaris, all while fostering learning, friendship, and adventure. Seafarers and Navigators will come together for a mid-day lunch onshore.
The Kingston Artist Soapbox Derby is a parade of non-motorized kinetic sculptures capable of rolling down lower Broadway in the Rondout neighborhood of Kingston, NY. It brings professional artists, the creative, families and friends together to show off their wild, wacky, and original soapbox creations. The derby takes place August 17th this year, and the Wooden Boat School will enter a float built by our students and volunteers.
Youth can come join the fun in a week-long class leading up to the derby. They'll be part of the team that will design and build our wooden float from scratch, while learning woodworking and mechanical skills along the way. No prior experience is required and anyone from age 11 up can join. This year students will build the car during Week 6 of the Voyager Summer Youth Camp. Register above.
Youth After-School Woodworking: Intro to Carpentry
The Intro to Woodworking and Carpentry is a dynamic series of after-school classes designed to teach youths age 14 to 18 the fundamentals of building with wood. These hands-on classes takes place Mondays & Tuesdays, 4:00-5:30 PM, from April 21 to May 28. The first two weeks will cover safety, power tool and hand tool use, and students will get their hands dirty practicing with a wide variety of tools to measure, cut, and shape wood.
In the remaining four weeks, they will work as a team to design and build a little library for the Kingston community. This project, which builds skills in project planning, layout and design, measurement, fabrication, and assembly, is the perfect vehicle for STEAM-based learning. As a miniature building, it's also a great starting point in applied learning for both college-track and vocational students.
