Woodworking and Boat Building classes for youth

Build Your Own Bat House

Picture
Date: Saturday Apr 22, 2023
For Earth Day we will be holding a special 3 hour class where students will build their own bat house and learn about the importance of bats to our ecosystem. The first half hour will be a fun educational information session all about bats! Following the presentation, students will assemble their bat house with the assistance of our woodworking instructor, and have a special homemade bat house to bring home. This program is great for all ages and family friendly. There are two sessions available at different times.
9AM-12PM
1PM-4PM

Youth Woodworking Series

This series of classes happens over 4 weeks. Students register for 1 week sessions. Each session runs Monday-Friday from 10AM-2PM. Students can register for as many sessions as they want. There are no prerequisites for any of the classes. This series is designed to build students' skills over the course of the four weeks. It is great to take the class sequentially but not required. Classes are limited to 8 students to make sure everyone receives individual attention. Designed for youth ages 12 - 16, this series will introduce students to the basics of woodworking and carpentry. Each 4 hour class will employ shop safety, measuring, layout,  joinery, and tool use and care. Each class will introduce additional tools and their applications. Students will take home their completed project on Fridays.
Tool Box and Bird House: July 10-14
Stool & Bandsaw Spoon: July 24-28
Bandsaw Box & Do Nothing Machine: August 7-11
Four Corner Tray: August 21-25

Building & Sailing Boats

Offered in three sessions, students will begin the course in the Boat School each morning learning basic woodworking skills. They will learn about the parts of a sailboat and practice their woodworking skills while working on two in-process Optimist Pram sailboats that will be added to the HRMM sailing fleet. After lunch, students will join US Sailing Certified instructors to learn the basics of sailing. Students will practice skipper and crew skills and will sail independently when they are ready to do so.

YouthBoat, Fall 2023

Registration for Fall will open in Summer 2023. YouthBoat is an after-school program for students ages 11-18 that is designed to empower youth, build character, and foster teamwork through the traditional craft of wooden boatbuilding and on-the-water activities. Students from diverse backgrounds put STEM skills to work as they learn alongside skilled shipwrights and craftspeople throughout the boat building process. Check out this video of a past YouthBuild session with Ulster BOCES!
