Youth Woodworking and Boat Building Classes

Summer 2026

Voyager Summer Youth Camp

Picture
Full Day | Multi-Activity | Ages 9 - 17
Tuition: $795 (gen. pub.) | $715 (HRMM members)

The HRMM Voyager Camp offers a truly unique, multi-activity, hands-on opportunity for young participants. It takes place in six week-long sessions from July 6th to August 14th. Students are welcome to register for one, two or more sessions as there will be new material each session.

Open to all skill levels, our Seafarers (9-12 years old) and Navigators (13-17 years old) spend each day sailing for three hours, boat building and woodworking for 90 minutes, and participating in other STEAM activities like history, crafts, games, and tours on our solar tour boat Solaris, all while fostering learning, friendship, and adventure. Seafarers and Navigators come together for a mid-day lunch onshore.

Build A Soapbox Derby Car

Picture
Aug. 3-7  |  Aug. 10-14
The Kingston Artist Soapbox Derby is a parade of non-motorized kinetic sculptures capable of rolling down lower Broadway in the Rondout neighborhood of Kingston, NY. It brings professional artists, the creative, families and friends together to show off their wild, wacky, and original soapbox creations.

Youth can come join the fun by signing up for one or both of the last two weeks of our Voyager Summer Camp. They'll be part of the team that will design and build our wooden float while learning woodworking and mechanical skills along the way. No prior experience is required and the camp is open to ages 9-12 and ages 13-17.

Fall 2026

Youth After-School Intro to Woodworking

Picture
Two afternoons per week  |  Oct. 13 - Nov. 18  |  Ages 13-18

This hands-on after-school class teaches youth the fundamentals of building with wood, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 4:15-5:45 PM, for six weeks. First we cover safety, power tool and hand tool use, and students will get their hands dirty practicing with a wide variety of tools to measure, cut, and shape wood. Then students work on a variety of small projects that they can take home at the end of the course, whether a stool or lidded box with dovetail joints. These projects build skills in project planning, design, measurement, fabrication, and assembly.

Scholarships are available for 25%, 50% or 100% of tuition. Apply here.
