Enjoy learning to row in the museum's Traditional Whitehall boat, the John Magnus. Participants will learn fixed seat, sweep rowing (rowing that is one person, one oar) and synchronicity (rowing together to achieve speed). No previous rowing experience is necessary. These hearty tours require a team of at least four crew members to row the gigs to the Lighthouse, and possibly north along the Hudson River to Kingston Point Beach (dependent on the skill level of the crew). The ability to swim is a prerequisite.
These lessons are led by experienced instructor Nelsie Aybar-Grau and run from 1:00PM to 4:00PM. Saturday, June 27, 2020 Saturday, July 25, 2020 Saturday, August 22, 2020 Saturday, September 19, 2020 Registrations currently on hold due to COVID19
Summer Rowing Program
Hudson River Maritime Museum is pleased to partner with the YMCA and Rondout Rowing Club to offer this amazing summer program. Our two week rowing program introduces young people who have little or no access to a waterfront and to the beauty of rowing.
Enjoy a two week session of crew training on the beautiful Rondout Creek. You will learn, and get a chance to hone essential skills for competitive rowing, rigging and maintenance of boats while enjoying beautiful summer days on the water. The rowing program is designed to help foster responsibility, positive learning, teamwork, initiative, and a caring attitude that crew members will be able to use in and out of this program.
