Practice Build - Saturday, May 30, 2020
All teams and sponsors are welcome to attend the practice build, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM to observe professional boat builder and veteran Challenge competitor Tom Russell build the Carolina Bateau from start to finish, with plenty of time for questions.
Teams may arrive as early as 8:00 AM to begin set-up. One parking space per team will be reserved near the Challenge tents. Rob Dwelley will lead a team safety meeting at 10:30 AM. Attendance at this meeting is mandatory for all team members.
Sponsors may start arriving at 8:30 AM to set up their tables. HRMM will provide tables under the big sponsor tent as well as banners for each sponsor. Sponsors must be set up by 9:30 AM, as the event opens at 10:00 AM.
Challenge begins at 11:00 AM and teams will have four full hours to complete their boats. Youth teams may receive verbal assistance from coaches, but may not receive physical assistance.
Once the building portion ends at 3:00 PM, teams will move their boats (with oars on!) out of the tent to the judging area, where the judges will assess construction. While boats are being judged, teams will please begin cleaning and packing up their work area.
Once judging is complete, teams will move their boats across the street to the museum courtyard near the aluminum rowing docks. Teams will relay race in four heats of three boats each beginning at 4:00 PM.
Once the races are over and times and all other scoring has been tabulated and judges have deliberated, the Awards Ceremony will start in the museum courtyard, with announcements from the Home Port Stage. At 6:00 PM the event closes and teams and sponsors will head toward their celebratory dinner, hosted by HRMM.
