We are only a couple of weeks into January and already storms have wreaked havoc and caused major damage to many waterfront communities and businesses—the Hudson River Maritime Museum included. Our yard and waterfront, and, more significantly, the Wooden Boat School were flooded as a result of the storm surge and rising water levels. As many of you know, the Wooden Boat School houses classroom space and our wood shop, making it the epicenter of our on-land programs. Despite efforts to lessen the impact, we took in 8 to 12 inches of water to the Boat School during each of the recent floods. Monitoring and Planning Flooding is now a common occurrence and its physical impact on our buildings, equipment, and ability to conduct our business is a reality that we have been facing head-on. Thanks to proactive monitoring of the river's levels, alongside a robust plan to protect our property and move furniture, tools and equipment, we are able to mitigate some damage. However, professional remediation work, the reassignment of staff hours, and the rescheduling or cancellation of public programs and education work puts considerable stress on our organization's resources and budget Click below to listen to HRMM's Executive Director, Lisa Cline, discuss the impact of flooding in more detail with Radio Kingston's John Bowermaster. More immediately, here are some ways you can join our community and show your support!
Become a Volunteer Volunteers are the lifeblood of HRMM – they give tours, staff the gift shop, help with public events, build things, do yard work, move docks, and make HRMM a wonderful place to visit and work. If you have a skill or an interest that you think would benefit us, please reach out! Click here for more information. Make a Donation Preparation and remediation work for floods and future-proofing is a strain on our resources. A taxable deductible donation to HRMM has immediate impact ensuring we can meet the on-going demands of our programming. Click here to make a donation
