Museum Welcomes Ship Model Society of New JerseyKingston, N.Y. - HRMM was happy to host members of the Ship Model Society of New Jersey and the Kenny family during their visit on December 27, 2021. Ron Searl (HRMM Exhibits Fabricator), Jim McCann (HRMM Waterfront & Fleet Manger), Carla Lesh (HRMM Collections Manager & Digital Archivist) and Mark Peckham (HRMM Trustee) showed the visitors around the museum and the boat school.
The Ship Model Society of New Jersey was formed in 1981 as a forum for ship modelers to meet and exchange ideas and information. Following the safety protocols of the COVID-19 pandemic response the society moved their monthly meetings online. Prior to the online move they met on the 4th Tuesday of every month at the Roseland Public Library, 20 Roseland Ave., Roseland, NJ, from 6:45-8:45 PM. An advantage to meeting virtually (and hybrid when circumstances allow) is the expansion of the society's membership from a local organization to an international one. Modelers have joined meetings from around North America and the Caribbean. While the virtual meetings don't allow for the after meeting snacks and conversations members were able to get together at the Hudson River Maritime Museum when Kevin and Susan Kenny, a new SMSNJ and HRMM member, were visiting from Trinidad. Daughter Shannon Kenny and her husband Wilson Parry, also new HRMM members, have a home in Kingston, NY. Kevin Kenny, who has been a wooden ship model builder for 20 years, posted a great video of the visit on his YouTube channel where he has shared dozens of videos on this fascinating topic. Hudson River Maritime Museum is pleased to partner with the Ship Model Society of New Jersey. To learn more about the group visit their website at www.shipmodelsocietyofnewjersey.org
