SCHOONER SUNK BY STEAMER.CENTRAL-HUDSON RUNS DOWN CONTRIVANCE — THE SCHOONER'S CAPTAIN DROWNED. The schooner Contrivance, Captain Calvin Delanoy, of Nyack, was run into and sunk by the steamer Central-Hudson about midnight last night. Captain Delanoy was drowned, but his son was rescued by the crew of the Central-Hudson. The accident occurred about a quarter of a mile north of the Esopus light. The Central-Hudson was slightly damaged about the copper on her bow and a few of the guards were torn off. The schooner left Rose's brickyard last night with 32,000 brick, bound for New York. It is claimed that the schooner was not displaying her lights, When she crossed the bow of the steamer it was Impossible to see her until it was too late for the latter to stop. The Contrivance began to sink as soon as she was struck and the crew of the steamer manned the fire boats to search for the crew of the schooner. The captain's son was taken aboard but the steamer City of Troy in passing created such a swell that the boats could not reach the captain. Captain Delanoy was a well-known riverman. He had been in charge of the Contrivance for a number of years. She was one of the oldest schooners plying the river, having been built about sixty years ago. This morning Mr. Rose sent men down to the wreck to search for the body of the drowned captain. He has offered a liberal reward for the recovery of the body.
