So Many Boats; So Little Time!

The Sailing School at the Hudson River Maritime Museum has been blessed with a generous number of boat donations which have allowed us to run our programs for children and adults.

We have many classes for beginners to more experienced sailors on a variety of types of sailboats. Take a look at the photos below - perhaps you will inspired to take a sailing class and try out some of our boats.

Young sailors single-hand their beautiful 8 foot long Optimist Pram Sailboats on the Hudson River under the watchful eyes of their instructors. Several of these boats were built by teens (with some adult assistance)  at the HRMM Youthboat program.

Some of our more intrepid sailing school students enjoy racing with Kingston Sailing Club. Our blue J24 is doing very well against a larger, faster sailboat in this image from a KSC race!

Two capable young sailors command their 420 sailboat, a fast centerboard racing sailboat which is capable of planing (or lifting partway out of the water) under the right conditions.

This beautiful Catboat Tidbit is a historic recreation of traditional catboats from the 19th and 20th centuries. She is a very stable centerboard boat, and though she doesn't sail upwind as efficiently as a sloop with a main and a jib, she is a sweet ride.

Adult and youth sailors alike enjoy sailing on our Merit 25, a Keel boat that is 25 feet in length. Keelboats have heavy, fixed keels attached to their hulls which prevent capsize in all but the most extreme conditions.

Three youth sailors learn with an instructor aboard a 14 Foot Catalina Capri Centerboard Sailboat. Centerboards pivot up and down, allowing the boat to sail into shallow water under certain points of sail. Centerboard boats do occasionally capsize, or turn over, but that doesn't deter our young sailors whose favorite activity is capsize practice!
Local sailors from the Sailing School at the Hudson River Maritime Museum and the Kingston Sailing Club (www.kingstonsailingclub.org) hope to see you on the water soon!
