Saturday was the Conference on Black History in the Hudson Valley, so for today's blog post we thought we'd share this brief overview of Slavery in the Hudson Valley from Vassar College. It's a common misconception that the North did not have slavery. New York was one of the largest slaveholding colonies in the 18th century. The conference presentations were recorded and will be available on YouTube in the coming weeks. Subscribe to our YouTube channel to ensure you don't miss a video. We have long been aware that the Schuylers held slaves, and considerable research has been done to uncover and honor the slaves, many of their names unrecorded, but honored like unknown soldiers, by the NY Historical Society and Friends of the Schuyler Mansion. In 1980, during a Historical Society sponsored "family reunion", I met a number of descendants of slaves, some of whom still carry the Schuyler surname. What I don't know is how many slaves were held by the various Schuyler, Van Rensselaer and Van Cortlandt branches of the Schuyler family and their vast land holdings during the 17th and 18th centuries (to say nothing of how they acquired those holding from Native Americans). Henry Louis Gates would have a ball tracing these things down!
